Sleep has an important role for health. During sleep, the body will repair itself, both physically and mentally, so that we feel refreshed and energized when we wake up in the morning, and are ready to carry out activities throughout the day.
In addition, sleep also helps the process of growth and development, especially in children and adolescents, because it is during sleep that growth hormone is released.
This is how terrible it is to be sleep deprived
Everyone’s sleep needs are not the same. However, in general, sleep quality is needed for 7-9 hours every day, so that this important function can run optimally. For children and adolescents, sleep needs range from 8-10 hours per day.
Inadequate sleep needs can cause you to look tired when you wake up, yawn throughout the day, drowsiness after eating, and have trouble concentrating. Some of the following can also happen if you are sleep deprived often:
1. Suffering from a serious illness
As many as 9 out of 10 people who suffer from insomnia also suffer from various serious diseases. Insomnia itself is a condition of someone who has trouble sleeping or has trouble sleeping well.
One of the serious diseases that can be suffered by people with insomnia is heart disease, both in the form of heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias), heart failure, and heart attacks.
Know that sleep plays an important role in the body’s ability to repair damaged blood vessels and heart. That is why, people who are sleep deprived are more prone to suffer from heart disease.
People with insomnia are at increased risk of developing diabetes, obesity, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, and mental health problems such as mood disorders and anxiety.
2. Sick easily and hard to recover
The immune system produces proteins called cytokines. Cytokines are needed to help the body fight infection, inflammation, and stress. When we sleep, the body will release cytokinins. If we are sleep deprived, the production of these cytokines will also decrease.
Lack of sleep also causes a decrease in the ability of the immune system and cells to fight infection. This of course can have a negative impact on the immune system’s resistance to infection, and the speed of the natural healing process.
3. Decreased sexual performance
Sleep-deprived men and women reported decreased desire to have sexual intercourse and had lower levels of sexual satisfaction. Their desire and attraction is reduced due to fatigue, sleepiness, and increased stress from lack of sleep.
Men who are sleep deprived are also more at risk of developing impotence. For men who suffer from sleep apnea, where there are respiratory problems that interfere with sleep, there may be another factor causing a lack of sexual interest, namely testosterone levels. At least half of men with sleep apnea report low testosterone levels.
4. Lower memory
Sleep is the time to enter what you have learned and experienced during the day into your short-term memory system. During sleep, the neural connections that support a person’s memory are strengthened.
If sleep time is disturbed, automatically the brain’s ability to process and store memories will also experience interference. Research has also shown that long-term sleep deprivation can cause a decrease in the brain’s ability to think and process information.
Lack of sleep will make a person sleepy, which is one reason people forget or forget. Drowsiness also causes loss of ability to concentrate. If this continues, then don’t be surprised if your memory is weak.
5. Quickly attacked premature aging
What will you see on the face of a sleep-deprived person? Pale skin and swollen eyes, right? If sleep deprivation occurs continuously, then the skin will become dull, fine wrinkles appear, and there are dark circles under the eyes. This occurs due to increased production of the hormone cortisol in people who are sleep deprived.
The excess cortisol hormone can damage collagen which functions to smooth and maintain skin elasticity. Lack of sleep also leads to reduced production of growth hormone, which plays a role in increased muscle mass, skin thickening and bone strengthening.
In addition to causing various health problems mentioned above, lack of sleep is also the cause of many traffic accidents and work accidents.
