Teens Emotions, Here’s the Explanation

Healthzia – Teenagers are often associated with a period of searching for identity. Those in this age group will explore the surrounding environment at a further and more complex level. As a result of this, adolescents are more prone to experiencing emotional turmoil within themselves.

Emotions in adolescents who are still unstable and are often influenced by their moods make them vulnerable to depression. If allowed, this condition can lead to unwanted things, for example, continuing to feel sad until they feel suicidal.

Suddenly angry and very sad when advised by parents because they were late coming home from school or came home to gather with friends to play with? or did she start making appearances because she wanted to get attention from the opposite sex? Parents do not worry because these things are emotional developments from the adolescent phase to the adult phase. Indeed, there are many oddities moving from adolescence to today, from starting to feel that something is wrong to being right to suddenly crying without cause.

How does the medical world explain this phenomenon?

Emotional complexity in teens

The emotional system resides in the limbic brain structure, while the logical system deals with the frontal area. The limbic system is responsible for regulating emotions, drives, rewards, and motivation. While the frontal system is concerned with decision making, impulse control and others. Both of these systems have their own way of working.

At all ages, the two structures will always be related to their respective duties and roles. However, in adolescence, hormonal factors and brain development that are more mature sometimes have to “sacrifice” the function of this part of the brain.

During adolescence, the limbic system will be in more contact with the hormone testosterone. This can trigger brain function to become more unstable and fluctuate.

Entering adulthood, for example in the 20s, the limbic brain system will be more correlated with the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the amygdala. The prefrontal cortex will develop and expand rapid communication pathways to the limbic system, and increase everything related to the emotions and desires of adolescents so that they can be more mature in responding to many things.

In fact, emotions and feelings are a part of everyday life so it is very important to learn them from an early age. In every decision making, emotions need to be involved because they can influence whatever is chosen. Being too emotional will cloud the rational attitude, while being too cold will remove the sensitive side.

How do you deal with teenage emotions?

Guiding adolescents to understand their emotions is not easy, because it requires a lot of patience. After all, this is the duty of the parents. Because if they are not protected, they (teenagers) will misinterpret how to behave, which can have an impact on their maturity.

Now for parents or those of you who have teenage siblings, it is very important to understand their development so that there are no misunderstandings. Teens who used to be emotional can develop better if they are accompanied, supervised and supported by the people around them.
